The History of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers’ Connective

The Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers’ Connective was born in September 2010 when one of our current members, Debra James Percival, proposed the creation of a printmakers’ club. She had just moved to Ottawa and was eager to invite enthusiastic printmakers to her home with the objective of sharing ideas, learning through demonstrations and socializing. An added benefit for the group could be that members could participate in print exchanges with other printmaking groups. Leonard Gerbrandt, a well-regarded instructor at the Ottawa School of Art, put together a long list of potential members. While no formal minutes were taken and details are sketchy, existing documentation does mention a delicious carrot cake that was enjoyed by all.
By the time the first formal meeting was held in November 2010, the mailing list had almost 40 names of local printmakers and visual artists. Sadly, one of the first items of business was to acknowledge the recent death of Leonard Gerbrandt, an accomplished printmaker who would no doubt have enjoyed being a member of the Connective.
It was agreed that the Connective’ mandate would be ‘…to foster and promote the knowledge and appreciation of hand-pulled prints and printmaking among its members and the general public. This is accomplished through monthly meetings, demonstrations, workshops and group exhibits.’
There was some discussion about our name. The potters have ‘guilds’, and watercolour painters have ‘societies’. The proposal of Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers’ Connective was quickly adopted.
The members agreed to meet once a month. The Ottawa School of Art provided the meeting room in Leonard’s memory.
The Connective’s first group activity was to participate in the annual International Print Exchange and Exhibition. This venue was an opportunity for printmakers from around the world to exchange and exhibit their work. The theme each year was the sign from the Chinese zodiac. Members continued to participate from the 2011 Year of the Rabbit until the demise of the exchange a few years later.
It was proposed that their first group show would be in a year’s time in order to celebrate the first anniversary of their founding.
In March 2012, the Connective had the opportunity to take stewardship of a small printing studio located in the Nepean Creative Arts Centre that was slated to be dismantled by the City. The studio currently has three presses and continues to be a valuable resource. Further, in 2013 the City offered the Connective a gallery wall at the NCAC. Deidre Hierlihy was and still is the administrative curator for this exhibition space dedicated to our work.
In March 2012, the Connective launched its Facebook page.
It has been over ten years since its founding and the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers’ Connective is still going strong. Members have continued to be active in the community, with print exchanges and group and individual shows, thereby contributing to the vitality of the Ottawa Gatineau artistic community.
Les débuts du Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau
Le Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau est né en septembre 2010 lorsque l’une de nos membres actuels, Debra James Percival, a proposé la création d’un club d’artistes-graveurs. Elle venait d’emménager à Ottawa et était impatiente d’inviter des artistes-graveurs enthousiastes chez elle dans le but de partager des idées, d’apprendre par des démonstrations et de socialiser. De plus, les membres du groupe pourraient ainsi participer à des échanges d’estampes avec d’autres groupes d’artistes-graveurs. Leonard Gerbrandt, un instructeur apprécié de l’École d’art d’Ottawa, a dressé une longue liste de membres potentiels. Bien qu’aucun procès-verbal officiel n’ait été rédigé et que les détails soient sommaires, la documentation existante mentionne qu’un délicieux gâteau aux carottes a été apprécié par tous et toutes.
Lorsque la première rencontre officielle a eu lieu en novembre 2010, la liste de diffusion comptait près de 40 noms d’artistes graveurs et d’artistes visuels locaux. Malheureusement, l’un des premiers points à l’ordre du jour était de souligner le décès récent de Leonard Gerbrandt, un artiste-graveur accompli qui aurait sûrement apprécié être membre du Collectif.
Il a été convenu que le mandat du Collectif serait “…de favoriser et de promouvoir la connaissance et l’appréciation des estampes tirées à la main et de la gravure parmi ses membres et le grand public. Ceci est accompli par des réunions mensuelles, des démonstrations, des ateliers et des expositions de groupe.
Il y a eu une discussion pour choisir notre nom. Les potiers ont des ” guildes ” et les aquarellistes des ” sociétés “. La proposition de Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau a été rapidement adoptée.
Les membres ont choisi de se réunir une fois par mois. L’École d’art d’Ottawa a fourni la salle de réunion en mémoire de Leonard.
La première activité de groupe du Collectif a été de participer à l’exposition annuelle ‘Exposition et échange internationales d’estampes’. Cette manifestation était l’occasion pour les artistes-graveurs du monde entier d’échanger et d’exposer leurs œuvres. À chaque année le thème était le signe du zodiaque chinois. À partir de 2011, l’année du lapin, les membres ont participé, et cela, jusqu’à la fin de ce projet d’échange quelques années plus tard. Pour célébrer le premier anniversaire de la fondation du Collectif, il a été proposé de monter une première exposition collective.
En mars 2012, le Collectif a eu l’opportunité de prendre en charge la gestion d’un petit studio d’impression situé dans le Centre des arts créatifs de Nepean (CACN), qui était destiné à être démantelé par la Ville. Le studio compte maintenant trois presses et continue d’être une ressource précieuse. De plus, en 2013 la Ville a offert au Collectif un espace d’exposition au CACN. Depuis le début, Deidre Hierlihy est la commissaire administrative de cet espace d’exposition dédié à notre travail.
En mars 2012, le Collectif a lancé sa page Facebook.
Plus de dix ans se sont écoulés depuis sa fondation et le Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau est toujours aussi dynamique. Les membres continuent d’être actifs dans la communauté, avec des échanges d’estampes et des expositions collectives et individuelles, contribuant ainsi à la vitalité de la communauté artistique d’Ottawa-Gatineau.
