Expressive Movement: dance, rhythm and flowMouvements expressifs: danse, rythme et fluidité 
The 12 artists represented on these walls have drawn inspiration from the dance students who move so gracefully through the Connective Gallery on their way to class. Hearing the rhythmic sounds of music and footsteps next door, these artists have responded with lively images of dancers, flowing patterns, and leaves fluttering like tutus.   Expressive Movement: dance, rhythm and flow presents 18 works of art made with varied printmaking techniques, from linocut and collagraph to etching, lithography, and silkscreen.While some of the artists have responded to the theme with figurative images, others have taken a more abstract approach, exploring rhythms in graphic patterns or in nature.   Founded in 2010, the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers’ Connective brings together some 60 local printmakers to participate in exhibitions, print exchanges, and other activities related to fine art printmaking. It presents a cycle of three or four exhibitions a year here in the Connective Gallery, as well as other shows in the region. The Connective also runs a small printing studio two doors down. Entendant les sons rythmés de la musique et des pas à côté, ces artistes ont répondu par des images vivantes de danseurs, de motifs fluides et de feuilles flottant comme des tutus.   Mouvements expressifs: danse, rythme et fluidité présente 18 œuvres d’art réalisées à l’aide de différentes techniques d’impression, de la linogravure au collagraphe en passant par l’eau-forte, la lithographie et la sérigraphie. Alors que certains artistes ont répondu au thème par des images figuratives, d’autres ont adopté une approche plus abstraite, explorant les rythmes dans les motifs graphiques ou dans la nature.   Fondé en 2010, le Collective d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau réunit une soixantaine de graveurs locaux qui participent à des expositions, des échanges d’estampes et d’autres activités liées à l’art de la gravure. Il présente un cycle de trois ou quatre expositions par an ici, à la Galerie du Collectif, ainsi que d’autres expositions dans la région. « EXCURSIONS », une exposition solo par Madeleine Rousseau

Madeleine Rousseau, membre du CAGOG, présentera une exposition solo intitulée “Excursions” du 7 mars au 1er avril 2024 à Orléans ON.

Cette exposition se veut une excursion dans l’imaginaire de l’artiste avec des thématiques et des techniques d’art visuel variées qu’elle affectionne depuis des années en tant qu’artiste autodidacte.  Rousseau interprète des sujets reliés à l’environnement, la nature, la littérature, le quotidien et l’abstraction avec les arts imprimés, les arts du livre, la calligraphie, les arts textiles et la peinture.

Madeleine Rousseau remercie le Mouvement d’implication francophone d’Orléans où se tiendra l’exposition, pour leur soutien.

“EXCURSIONS”, a solo exhibition  by Madeleine Rousseau

OGPC Member Madeleine Rousseau will present a solo exhibition titled “Excursions” March 7 – April 1, 2024 in Orleans ON.

This exhibition is intended as an excursion into the artist’s imagination, with a variety of themes and visual art techniques that she has been pursuing for years as a self-taught artist.  Rousseau interprets subjects related to the environment, nature, literature, everyday life and abstraction, using printmaking, book arts, calligraphy, textile arts and painting.

Madeleine Rousseau thanks the Mouvement d’implication francophone d’Orléans (MIFO) where the exhibition will take place, for their support.

Biography. Denise is a visual artist and printmaker and has been a member of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective since 2018.  She also maintains a lifedrawing and painting practice. Denise lives in Orléans and is a member of Arteast.

Artist Statement. My objective over the last few years has been to explore different printmaking methods.  I had no particular overarching theme. I simply wanted to work and trusted that my muse and the process would bring my voice forward. 

Art poses a challenge. How does the artist express a commitment to social justice without being didactic, dogmatic or falling into cliched visual symbols? 

This show represents an eclectic variety of methods, sizes, colours and includes etchings on zinc, aluminum and copper, collagraphs, monotypes and monoprints. It is, in large part, borne of my 3 year stay at the Stafford Studios as a participant in the City of Ottawa Art Studio Program. I thank the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective for their support for this exhibition.

Biographie. Denise est une artiste visuelle et une graveuse. Elle est une membre du Collectif d’ Artistes graveur d’ Ottawa-Gatineau depuis 2018. Elle pratique également le dessin d’après nature et la peinture. Denise vit à Orléans et est membre d’Arteast.

Déclaration de l’artiste. Au cours des dernières années, mon objectif a été d’explorer différentes méthodes de gravure. Je n’avais pas de thème particulier. Je voulais simplement travailler et j’avais confiance que ma muse et le processus me permettraient de faire entendre ma voix.

L’art est un défi. Comment l’artiste peut-il exprimer son engagement en faveur de la justice sociale sans être didactique, dogmatique ou tomber dans des symboles visuels clichés ?

Cette exposition représente une variété éclectique de méthodes, de tailles, de couleurs et comprend des gravures sur zinc, aluminium et cuivre, des collagraphies et des monotypes. Elle est, en grande partie, le fruit de mon séjour de trois ans aux Studios Stafford en tant que participante au Programme des studios d’art de la Ville d’Ottawa. Je remercie la Ville d’Ottawa et le Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective pour leur soutien à cette exposition.

Picturing the Invisible: Sights/ Sites Unseen   ̶  Imaginer l’invisible: scènes/sites non vus

Join us at the reception, Sunday, December 3, 2023, from 2 to 4 pm, at the gallery! All are welcome.

Using varied printmaking techniques, from relief and intaglio to cyanotype, lithography, collagraph, and silkscreen, 14 artists in their 21 works of art reveal their explorations of sites and sights unseen. These works provide glimpses of places, perceptions, and psychological worlds. Some picture the natural world, both tiny and vast, at once revealing and hiding. Others suggest what happens behind closed doors and between the lines. Still others allude to memories and remnants of the past.  They are all well worth seeing!

En utilisant diverses techniques d’impression, du relief à la taille-douce en passant par le cyanotype, la lithographie, la collagraphie et la sérigraphie, 14 artistes révèlent dans leurs 21 œuvres d’art leurs explorations de sites et de vues invisibles. Ces œuvres donnent un aperçu des lieux, des perceptions et des mondes psychologiques. Certaines représentent le monde naturel, à la fois minuscule et vaste, à la fois révélateur et caché. D’autres suggèrent ce qui se passe derrière les portes closes et entre les lignes. D’autres encore évoquent des souvenirs et des vestiges du passé.  Elles valent toutes la peine d’être vues!

With the worst of the pandemic behind us, many people have resumed travel to distant and exotic lands, often sending home photographs and stories through social media. There was a time, however, when the postcard was the preferred medium for communicating with family and friends. With a souvenir image on one side and a brief handwritten tale on the other, travellers conveyed the excitement, the glory, and sometimes the pain, of travel. 


Beyond the Postcard: Prints from Away presents work by 18 artists exploring the theme of travel, and recalling the classic postcard, either explicitly or implicitly. With 29 works made using varied printmaking techniques  ̶  including monotype, linocut, drypoint, etching, collagraph and silkscreen  ̶  this exhibition transports viewers to faraway places, to gaze on towns and their inhabitants, landscapes, seascapes, flora and fauna, and even outer space.

Le pire de la pandémie étant passé, de nombreuses personnes ont repris le chemin des voyages lointains et exotiques, envoyant souvent des photos et des récits par l’intermédiaire des médias sociaux. Mais il fut un temps où la carte postale était le moyen privilégié de communication avec la famille et les amis. Avec une image souvenir au recto et un bref récit écrit à la main au verso, les touristes transmettaient l’excitation, la gloire et parfois le malheur du voyage. 
Au-delà de la carte postale : Impressions d’ailleurs présente les œuvres de 18 artistes qui explorent le thème du voyage et rappellent la carte postale classique de manière explicite ou implicite. Avec 29 œuvres réalisées à l’aide de diverses techniques d’arts imprimés  ̶  monotype, linogravure, pointe sèche, eau-forte, collagraphie et sérigraphie  ̶  cette exposition transporte le spectateur dans des contrées lointaines, à la rencontre de villes et de leurs habitants, de paysages terrestres et marins, de flore et de faune, et même du cosmos.

“Print Pairings: Colour vs Black and White”/ Estampes jumelées : couleur vs noir et blanc

The Ottawa School of Art, Orleans Campus Gallery is proud to present Print Pairings: Colour vs Black and White, a group show by the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective. Works will be on display from May 14 to June 24, 2023 at the Ottawa School of Art’s Orleans Gallery located on the main floor of the Shenkman Arts Centre 245 Centrum Blvd. Orleans ON. K1E 0A1. Reception on Sunday May 28, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome!

For many artists, the choice to work in colour or strictly in black and white is a fundamental design decision. With ready access to every possible hue, a choice to abstain from colour is all the more shocking or thought-provoking.

In this exhibition, the artists present a pair of prints – one in black and white, and one in colour. The exhibition is an exploration of how the prints in each pairing complement and accentuate, or even challenge, each other. The prints are not necessarily the same rather, the artist matches two prints to demonstrate how they use colour versus black and white to convey separate meanings, place different emphases, create distinct moods, or express diverse emotions.

La galerie de l’École d’art d’Ottawa — campus d’Orléans est fière de présenter Print Pairings : Colour vs Black and White (Estampes jumelées : couleur vs noir et blanc), une exposition de groupe du Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau. Les œuvres seront exposées du 14 mai au 24 juin 2023, à la galerie de l’École d’art d’Ottawa — campus d’Orléans, située à l’étage principal du Centre des arts Shenkman au 245 boulevard Centrum, Orléans (Ontario), K1E 0A1. La réception aura lieu le dimanche 28 mai, de 13 h à 15 h. Bienvenue à tous ! 

Pour de nombreux artistes, le choix de travailler en couleur ou strictement en noir et blanc est une décision de conception fondamentale. Avec un accès facile à toutes les teintes imaginables, le choix de s’abstenir des couleurs est d’autant plus étonnant ou porte à réflexion.

Dans cette exposition, les artistes présentent une paire d’estampes ; une en noir et blanc et une en couleur. L’exposition consiste en une exploration de la façon dont les estampes de chaque paire se complètent et s’accentuent, voire se défient. Les estampes ne sont pas forcément les mêmes ; l’artiste associe deux œuvres pour illustrer comment elles utilisent les couleurs par rapport au noir et blanc, pour transmettre des significations distinctes, mettre des accents différents, créer des ambiances précises ou exprimer diverses émotions autour d’un thème ou d’une image connexe.

Migration

In this group exhibition, eight local artist-printmakers share their diverse interpretations of migration. The artists participating in “Migration” raise important and timely political, economic, ecological and social issues. They do so in a wide variety of formats and printmaking techniques. The body of work creates an immersive experience about the phenomena of migration. This exhibition invites the viewer to reflect on their own relationship or history with the phenomena of migration.

New Directions in Printmaking, planned for the Connective Gallery, found a home at the Byward Market Campus of the Ottawa School of Art. A big thank you goes to Cathy Brake, the OSA exhibitions coordinator, and to Diedre Hierlihy, OSA instructor and longtime OGPC member, for the opportunity. Murray Dineen and Lea Hamilton for organized the show of six young artists and new members of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective. The show was hung on March 1 by Roger Sutcliffe and Murray. Thanks also go to Roger for the photos and videos.The exhibition is at the Lee Matasi Gallery, Ottawa School of Art, Byward Market, from March 1 to March 15, 2023.

L’exposition Nouvelles orientations des arts imprimés, prévue pour la galerie Connective, a trouvé sa place au campus du marché By de l’École d’art d’Ottawa. THE OTTAWA-GATINEAU PRINTMAKERS CONNECTIVE PRESENTS THREE THEMED EXHIBITIONS AT THE ALTA VISTA BRANCH OF THE OTTAWA PUBLIC LIBRARY 

You are invited to visit the Alta Vista Branch of the OPL between Jan. 20 and March 17, 2023 to be immersed in printmaking and in the perspective of 20 local printmakers through 48 original prints created using a variety of printmaking techniques. 

“COLOUR CHANGES EVERYTHING” EXHIBITION

The exhibition is happening in the middle of winter when we most need ‘colour’ to lift our spirits and bring some cheerfulness into our lives.  On top of our colourful prints, perhaps some funky fungi, spiders, a sassy blackbird or sailing rats might cause you to chuckle.  Why not visit our exhibition to find the similarities and difference among the 28 thought-provoking prints.

Libraries are magical places that speak a universal language. No matter where you may be, a library can provide a reprieve, a sense of the familiar and a connection to the community and world at large. Participating printmakers share works inspired by their feelings, thoughts and experiences around books and the libraries that make these accessible to so many.

Vous êtes invités à visiter la succursale Alta Vista de la BPO entre le 20 janvier et le 17 mars 2023 pour vous immerger dans les arts imprimés et dans la perspective de 20 graveurs locaux à travers 48 gravures originales créées en utilisant une variété de techniques d’impression.

EXPOSITION « LA COULEUR CHANGE TOUT »

L’exposition a lieu en plein hiver, au moment où nous avons le plus besoin de “couleur” pour nous remonter le moral et apporter un peu de gaieté dans nos vies.  En plus de nos estampes colorées, il y aura peut-être des champignons funky, des araignées, un merle insolent ou des rats marins qui pourraient vous faire rire.  Pourquoi pas visiter notre exposition et découvrir les similitudes et les différences entre les 28 estampes incitant à la réflexion.

EXPOSITION « DANS LA BIBLIOTHÈQUE »

Les bibliothèques sont des lieux magiques qui parlent un langage universel. Où que vous soyez, une bibliothèque peut vous offrir un répit, un sentiment de familiarité et un lien avec la communauté et le monde en général. Les artistes-graveurs participants partagent des œuvres inspirées de leurs sentiments, leurs pensées et leurs expériences liés aux livres et aux bibliothèques qui les rendent accessibles à tant de personnes.

EXPOSITION « MIGRATION »

Les artistes participant à « Migration” » soulèvent des questions politiques, économiques, écologiques et sociales importantes et d’actualité. Cette exposition invite le spectateur à réfléchir à sa propre relation ou histoire avec les phénomènes de migration.

Climate Change – A Pressing Matter / Le changement climatique – une question pressante.

With climate change now undeniable, people are coming to grips with its impacts at the personal, local, societal and global levels. Art has an important role to play in helping us imagine new possibilities in a world in which we address climate change. With the double entendre of printmaking and something that is urgent/ important, it allows the artist a full range for self-expression.

Using a variety of printmaking techniques, from monotype, linocut and woodcut to etching and lithography, eleven artists explore the wide-ranging impacts of climate change and the urgent need to protect our planet. As global temperatures rise and human activity encroach on natural habitats, glaciers are melting, forest fires are raging, and extreme weather events are destroying communities. Turtles and bird populations are declining. Oceans are clogged with the detritus of human activity. Just last spring, in the Ottawa region, a powerful windstorm, or derecho, ripped up huge trees and claimed lives. Climate change is a pressing matter. What does the future hold in this time of the Anthropocene? Will the earth’s creatures be able to adapt? Will they have to search for more hospitable habitats? Can we humans reduce our carbon footprints and become better stewards of our planet? Can technology help? These are some of the questions asked by these artists… with the help of the printing press.

LE COLLECTIF D’ARTISTES-GRAVEURS D’OTTAWA-GATINEAU PRÉSENTE L’EXPOSITION ‘LE CHANGEMENT CLIMATIQUE – Une question pressante’

Le changement climatique étant désormais indéniable, les gens sont confrontés à ses conséquences aux niveaux personnel, local, sociétal et mondial. L’art a un rôle important à jouer pour nous aider à imaginer de nouvelles possibilités dans un monde où l’on s’attaque au changement climatique. Grâce au double
sens de la gravure et de l’urgence/importance, l’artiste peut s’exprimer pleinement.

Onze artistes explorent les vastes répercussions du changement climatique et l’urgence de protéger notre planète à l’aide de diverses techniques d’art imprimé, telles que le monotype, la linogravure, la gravure sur bois, l’eau-forte et la lithographie. Alors que les températures mondiales augmentent et que l’activité humaine empiète sur les habitats naturels, les glaciers fondent, les feux de forêt font rage et les phénomènes météorologiques extrêmes détruisent des communautés. Les populations de tortues et d’oiseaux sont en déclin. Les océans sont encombrés par les détritus de l’activité humaine. Au printemps
dernier, même, dans la région d’Ottawa, une puissante tempête de vent appellée « derecho » a détruit d’énormes arbres et fait des victimes. Le changement climatique est une question pressante. Que nous réserve l’avenir à l’heure de l’Anthropocène ? Les créatures de la terre pourront-elles s’adapter ? Devront-elles chercher des habitats plus accueillants ? Pouvons-nous, les humains, réduire notre empreinte carbone et devenir de meilleurs intendants de notre planète ? La technologie peut-elle nous aider ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions posées par ces artistes… avec l’aide de la presse à imprimer.
