An Exhibition of Print Works at the Book Arts Lab, MacOdrum Library, Carleton University

Featuring the print works of Beth Shepherd, Madeleine Rousseau, and Shealagh Pope

Exhibition runs September 23rd through to December 20, 2022

Special Public Event: Friday, October 14th, 1-4pm

Offered in the Book Arts Lab. Video Presentations followed by printing demonstrations, including making your own relief print, making trace monotypes and dark ground monotypes, and printing linocuts. (Cet événement sera offert en anglais.)

Members of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective (OGPC) offer a behind-the-scenes look at the complexities of printmaking to elucidate the importance of printmaking in contemporary arts. Working collectively on the theme of Migration, the audience is witness to the artist’s process as they explore variations on a theme so crucial to the world today. Practiced by individuals and groups, humans and other species, migration boils down to changing location in search of new resources or opportunities, safety and ultimately survival. The artists invite the audience into their process as they tease meaning from visual threads and entwine them into a picture of migration in the 21st century. The hub will offer three online video-based events, where each artist provides a behind-the-scenes look at their creative process for a piece in the ‘Migration in Print’ exhibition, being held at Carleton University’s new Book Arts Lab in the MacOdrum Library September 23rd through December 20. On October 14th, 1-4pm, the Book Arts Lab will host a public event featuring the artists’ work and offering a hands-on printmaking experience.

FINDING THE BOOK ARTS LAB

The Book Arts Lab is located on the ground (2nd) floor of the MacOdrum Library located at the south end of campus on the Quad.

Parking: Lot 1 is the closest lot to the library. There is a self serve kiosk to pay using cash, debit or credit or use the app Hotspot. If you don’t mind a hike into campus, you may find free parking on the streets or parks in Old Ottawa South.

Group Exhibition “At the Library” now at Ottawa School of Art – Exposition collective “À la bibliothèque” à l’École d’art d’Ottawa

Eight artists, members of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective, have a group exhibition titled At the Library at the Ottawa School of Art (Byward Market campus). Stephanie Amos, Luigina Baratto, Murray Dineen, Deidre Hierlihy, Shealagh Pope, Madeleine Rousseau, Beth Shepherd and Jennifer Waterman have interpreted the theme using such printmaking techniques as linocuts, stone lithography, drypoint, collagraphy, and handmade stamps, to produce two- and three-dimensional art works. The guest Curator is Stephanie Amos.

Location: Ottawa School of Art 35 Georges St. Ottawa. The exhibition is in the vitrines on the first floor of the OSA.

Exposition collective “À la bibliothèque” à l’École d’art d’Ottawa

Huit artistes, membres du Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’ Ottawa-Gatineau, présentent une exposition collective intitulée À la bibliothèque à l’École d’art d’Ottawa (campus du marché By). Stephanie Amos, Luigina Baratto, Murray Dineen, Deidre Hierlihy, Shealagh Pope, Madeleine Rousseau, Beth Shepherd et Jennifer Waterman ont interprété le thème en utilisant des techniques des arts imprimés telles que la linogravure, la lithographie sur pierre, la pointe sèche, la collagraphie et les tampons faits à la main, pour produire des œuvres d’art bidimensionnelles et tridimensionnelles. La conservatrice invitée est Stephanie Amos.

Printmaking in the Park is about making the art of hand-pulled printmaking more accessible to printmakers and the broader public. The labour-intensive cutting of relief plates of wood and linoleum can be challenging for many printmakers. A CNC machine can be used to transfer the artist’s vision to a plate that can still be hand pulled. Under cover of the Trolley Station Picnic Pavilion located at Britannia Beach, Darcy White and Doug Commons of Hack613 will demonstrate how the CNC machine can be used to cut relief plates for making hand-pulled prints. Members of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective will demonstrate and discuss various aspects of hand-pulled printmaking.

The Trolley Station Picnic Pavilion is booked from 12-5 PM. It is a large space that can accommodate 50 or more people. Please feel free to invite friends and family. Come early or stay later and make it a picnic! Bring your own picnic lunch and beverages or pick up lunch at the nearby Baja Burger Shack at Britannia Beach. Lots of free parking is available and Britannia Park is served by the 51 Britannia bus line. You can bring lawn chairs and lawn games if you like.

We will follow any applicable federal, provincial and municipal COVID guidelines in effect at the time of the event. Please do not come if you are sick or test positive and wear a mask if you are in close proximity to others.

THE OTTAWA-GATINEAU PRINTMAKERS CONNECTIVE PRESENTS THE EXHIBITION ‘PAINTERLY PRINTMAKING: Monotypes and Monoprints‘

The summer exhibition at the Connective Gallery showcases the work of eleven OGPC artists who explore forms of monotypes and monoprints.  Often referred to as painterly printmaking, these techniques are among the simplest of printmaking methods. Yet the variety of approaches used  ̶  splashes of colour, spontaneous gestures or painstaking detail, additions of collage or found materials, use of stencils or organic materials – results in works that are visually complex and emotionally expressive.

LE COLLECTIF D’ARTISTES-GRAVEURS D’OTTAWA-GATINEAU PRÉSENTE L’EXPOSITION  ‘L’ESTAMPE PICTURALE :  Monotypes et monogravures’  

L’exposition d’été à la Galerie Connective présente les œuvres de onze artistes de l’OGPC qui explorent les monotypes et les monogravures.  Souvent qualifiées d’estampes picturales, ces techniques sont parmi les plus simples des méthodes d’impression. Pourtant, la variété des approches utilisées, telles que les éclaboussures de couleurs, les gestes spontanés ou les détails minutieux, l’ajout de matériaux collés ou trouvés, et l’utilisation de pochoirs ou de matériaux organiques, donne lieu à des œuvres visuellement complexes et expressives d’émotion.

New Exhibition “Printmaking without a Press” / Nouvelle exposition “Oui, on peut faire des arts imprimés sans l’usage d’une presse ”

OTTAWA-GATINEAU PRINTMAKERS CONNECTIVE PRESENTS THE EXHIBITION ‘PRINTMAKING WITHOUT A PRESS‘

In 2020 and 2021 many printmakers did not have access to a printing press as collective print studios were closed during the pandemic. Fortunately, not all printmaking techniques require the use of a press. In this exhibition organized by the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective, twelve printmakers created original printed artwork without using a press.  This shows that printmaking can be affordable and accessible to all, with just a few tools, like a spoon!  Artists used such techniques as relief, hapa zome, gyotaku, ecoprinting, cyanotype, monotype – traced or  using a gel plate, marbling,  stencilling and stamping.

The Printmaking without A Press exhibition showcases original 2D and 3D artwork by 12 OGPC printmakers.They use a variety of techniques not requiring the use of a press.
L’exposition Oui on peut faire des arts imprimés sans l’usage d’une presse ! présente des oeuvres 2D et 3D de 12 artistes-graveurs du CAGOG. Ceux-ci ont utilisés diverses techniques d’impression ne nécessitant pas l’utilisation d’une presse.

LE COLLECTIF D’ARTISTES-GRAVEURS D’OTTAWA-GATINEAU PRÉSENTE L’EXPOSITION  ‘OUI ON PEUT FAIRE DES ARTS IMPRIMÉS SANS L’USAGE D’UNE PRESSE’  

Ces deux dernières années, de nombreux artistes-graveurs n’avaient pas accès à une presse pour travailler car les ateliers collectifs équipés de presses étaient fermés pendant la pandémie. Heureusement plusieurs techniques d’impression ne nécessitent pas l’utilisation d’une presse. Dans cette exposition organisée par le Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau, 12 artistes ont créé des estampes originales en 2D et 3D sans l’usage d’une presse. Cela démontre bien que les arts imprimés peuvent être abordables et accessibles, avec peu d’outils, comme une cuiller ! Les artistes ont utilisé des techniques telles que le relief, le hapa zome, le gyotaku, l’éco-impression, le cyanotype, le monotype  en tracé ou à l’aide d’une plaque de gel, la marbrure, le pochoir et les tampons.

InterconneXion in Montebello

In 2020 6 members of the OGPC, Tina Petrovicz, Valerie Bridgeman, Susan Cartwright, Laurence Finet,  Dale Shutt and Louis Guay along with Rob Hinchley participated in the Steamroller printing event in Shawville, QC. Now the 14 prints they created are on the road! The next stop for this exciting touring exhibit will be at the Centre d’action culturelle de la MCR de Papineau in Montebello.

The theme of the exhibit is interconnection, with each artist exploring different aspects of our interconnection to nature, the environment, our community, our history, and one another . The exhibit also includes a video that artfully documents the process of InterconneXion.

The Vernissage is Friday May 6, 2022 from 5 pm to 7pm. The show runs May 7th to July 3rd at the Centre d’action culturelle de la MCR de Papineau 548 Rue Notre Dame, Montebello, QC. The hours of operation are Wednesday thru Friday 10AM to 4:30 PM, Saturday 10AM to 5 PM and Sunday 1PM to 5PM. Please note masks mandates are still in place in Quebec  (as of the creation of this post Apr 28).

The artists would like to thank ArtPontiac and CALQ for their support that permitted them to create and exhibit.

Les 14 tirages qu’ils ont créés partent maintenant en tournée ! Le prochain arrêt de cette passionnante exposition itinérante se fera au Centre d’action culturelle de la MRC de Papineau à Montebello.

Le thème de l’exposition est l’interconnexion, chaque artiste explorant différents aspects de notre
interconnexion avec la nature, l’environnement, notre communauté, notre histoire et les autres. L’exposition comprend également un vidéo qui documente artistiquement le processus d’InterconneXion.

Le vernissage aura lieu le vendredi 6 mai 2022 de 17 à 19 heures. L’exposition sera présentée du 7 mai au 3 juillet au Centre d’action culturelle de la MRC de Papineau 548 Rue Notre Dame, Montebello. Les heures d’ouverture : du mercredi au vendredi 10H à 16H30, le samedi 10H à 17H et le dimanche 13H à 17H. Veuillez noter que les mandats de masquage sont toujours en vigueur au Québec (en date du 28 avril).

Vernissage of Waterworks on Paper

Come on out to the vernissage of Waterworks on Paper, Thursday April 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Connective Gallery, Nepean Creative Arts Centre, 35 Stafford Road, Ottawa (Bell’s Corners).

This is a chance to see a beautiful exhibition by members of the OGPC and Mahone Bay Printmakers, and to talk to some of the participating artists.

Refreshments will be served. Masks are encouraged.

Invitation to two exciting events at the Shenkman Arts Centre on April 3, 2022

On Sunday April 3, two events at the Shenkman Arts Centre you will not want to miss :

  • Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective will hold a vernissage for its exhibition Creative Reuse in Printmaking.  Sixteen printmakers present 26 artworks based on recycling and repurposing of what is often referred to as waste materials.
    • Vernissage: April 3, 1:30-3:30PM
    • The exhibition ends on May 30th
  • Ria Links Artists for Systems Change presents Climate Change – Passion to Action in the LaLande + Doyle Exhibition Space. A call to artists by Ria Links Artists for Systems Change  (Ria Links) generated 115 posters created by local artists and children, showing positive actions everyone can take to mitigate climate change. As much as possible, the exhibition was created and installed with borrowed and found materials. 
    • Opening reception : April 3, 1:30-4PM.
    • The exhibition ends on May 1st.

Le dimanche 3 avril, deux événements auront lieu au Centre des Arts Shenkman : 

  • Le Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau offrira un vernissage pour son exposition Réutilisation créative en arts imprimés. Seize artistes-graveurs présentent 26 œuvres basées sur le recyclage et la réutilisation de ce que l’on perçoit souvent comme des déchets.
    • Vernissage : le 3 avril, 13h30 à 15h30.
    • L’exposition se termine le 30 mai
  • Ria Links Artists for Systems Change présente Changements climatiques- de la passion à l’action dans l’espace d’exposition LaLande + Doyle. Un appel aux artistes lancé par by Ria Links Artists for Systems Change  (Ria Links) a généré 115 affiches créées par des artistes locaux et des enfants, montrant les actions positives que chacun peut entreprendre pour atténuer les changements climatiques. Dans la mesure du possible, l’exposition a été créée et installée avec des matériaux empruntés et trouvés.
    • Réception d’ouverture: le 3 avril, 13h30 à 16h.
    • L’exposition se termine le 1er mai.

Waterworks on Paper: Exhibition and Print Exchange

A collaboration between OGPC and the Mahone Bay Printmakers, Waterworks on Paper is now on view at the Connective Gallery. Originally exhibited in April 2021 at the Lunenburg Art Gallery in Nova Scotia, , the show was never seen in Ottawa because of pandemic restrictions. Now, finally, we can enjoy Waterworks both in person  and online. The 22 prints demonstrate a variety of approaches to the theme of water, from figurative to abstract works, and from mezzotint to etching, relief and photogravure.

Participating artists from OGPC are Mary Baranowski-Lowden, Sylvia Bretzloff, Valerie Bridgeman, Susan Cartwright, Peter Dolan, Deidre Hierlihy, Rob Hinchley, Freida Hjartarson, Shealagh Pope, Katherine Stauble and Roger Sutcliffe.

Eau, source d’imagerie: Exposition et échange d’estampes

Fruit d’une collaboration entre le CAGOG et le Mahone Bay Printmakers, Eau, source d’imagerie est maintenant à l’affiche à la Galerie du Collectif. Apparue pour la première fois en avril 2021 à la Lunenburg Art Gallery en Nouvelle-Écosse, l’exposition n’a jamais été présentée à Ottawa en raison des restrictions liées à la pandémie. Maintenant, nous pouvons enfin apprécier Eau, source d’imagerie en personne et en ligne. Les 22 estampes illustrent une variété d’approches du thème de l’eau, allant des œuvres figuratives aux œuvres abstraites, et de la manière noire à l’eau-forte, au relief et à la photogravure.

Les artistes participants du CAGOG sont Mary Baranowski-Lowden, Sylvia Bretzloff, Valerie Bridgeman, Susan Cartwright, Peter Dolan, Deidre Hierlihy, Rob Hinchley, Freida Hjartarson, Shealagh Pope, Katherine Stauble et Roger Sutcliffe.
